For me the a Lionel Set which included a 2338 Milwaukee Road GP-7 Road Switcher is what precipitated my lifelong journey into the world of trains and model railroading. These are my two 2338's neither of which is the one I originally received Christmas morning 1956.
The Berkshire 2-8-4 Type 736 was produced by Lionel from 1950 to 1968 and there are a number of variations. It is a favorite amongst collectors and operators alike. I believe this particular locomotive with it's stamped silver number on the cab, its three cab windows, flag posts on the pilot and die-cast trailing truck was made between 1950 and 1951. It is pictured with a Lionel Lines 2671WX tender, one of the three types of tenders the 736 received during the years of it's production.
There are a number of variations of the 2025. This particular variation has the redesigned pilot with simulated coupler. It also has spoked drivers instead of the Baldwin disc drivers. It does not have magnetraction because magnetic material was in great demand throughout during the Korean War This variation of the 2025 came with a 6466W tender,
Lionel's 681 was produced in 1950, 1951 and then again in 1953. It was based on the Pennsylvania Railroads Experimental S-2 Turbine. While the S-2 was not a big success for the PRR, it was a smash hit for Lionel and it remains popular with operators and collectors today.
